The City’s Sustainability Goals and How to Achieve Them
Recyclables and compostable items cannot be mixed with general household garbage
Per city ordinance 9.08.030, recyclable items must be separated from general trash. So, if you opt out of the curbside recycling program, you are responsible for transporting recyclables to an area recycling facility.
The same thing is true for compostable items, primarily yard waste. It must be separated from general household garbage and brought to a composting facility, or composted onsite.
Sustainable Salt Lake City goals
The City has an ambitious plan to eliminate all waste heading to landfills by 2040. The plan is to increase recycling rates a little each year from about 34% in 2011 to 50% in 2015 and so on.
There are also plans to implement incentive programs to help boost recycling rates, make changes to the municipal code to increase commercial recycling, and require that all construction and demolition (C&D) debris be recycled.

Where to dispose of household hazardous waste
The Salt Lake Valley Landfill accepts household hazardous waste (HHW). It’s open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 5pm. There is no charge for pickup trucks or single-axle trailer drop offs.
Some of the items accepted at SLVL include e-waste, paint, oil, batteries, fluorescent lighting, and much more. Call for complete listing of acceptable items.
